A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by warehouse workers at an Amazon.com facility in Staten Island, NY, that alleged the retail and tech giant had failed to follow public health rules to protect their safety. Amazon’s announcement this week that it is offering free returns on an expanded list of items might seem like a shrewd move to pump up holiday sales, but some think making returns that easy encourages the wrong behavior. “Returns are expensive,” Joel Rampoldt, a managing director in the retail practice at AlixPartners, told MarketWatch. “Not in the transport, but in what has to happen next.” Amazon faces enormous costs in sorting and repacking returned merchandise, and that’s just part of the problem.
