Japanese giant Rakuten has announced a $100 million investment into its Indian operations in 2025, alongside an 8 percent increase in local headcount, aiming to position India as a strategic innovation hub for AI and tech infrastructure.

According to the Retailers Association of India (RAI), the country’s $900-billion retail sector could generate 50 million new jobs by 2030. With projected 12 percent growth in 2025, the momentum is being driven by rising incomes, digital adoption, and deeper consumer participation across Tier I to Tier IV markets.

Reliance Retail is scaling through a mix of AI-led recruitment and omnichannel expansion—hiring thousands of associates across Smart Bazaar, JioMart, and its premium beauty and fashion networks. The company is actively tapping into Tier II and III talent pools, using data to match skills with formats ranging from mass to luxury.

Landmark Group is expanding Max Fashion, Splash, and Lifestyle stores across smaller cities, enhancing in-store service with trained associates. Shoppers Stop has ramped up hiring in its beauty and premium lifestyle divisions to support a customer experience-first strategy.

The Startup Surge: Beauty, Health, and Retail-Tech

India’s booming beauty and health sector is emerging as a hotbed for retail employment. At SUGAR Cosmetics and Pilgrim, rapid store rollouts are creating opportunities in retail operations, influencer management, visual merchandising, and training. Health & Glow, a veteran in the beauty space, is reinventing itself as an omnichannel brand, hiring aggressively for operations, marketing, and customer experience roles to enhance shopper journeys.

The quick commerce sector—led by Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart—is fast becoming a top employer in last-mile retail. These companies are recruiting not just delivery executives but also talent in micro-warehousing, store design, inventory optimization, and real-time analytics.

Physical Retail’s New Avatar: Experience, Expertise, and Expansion

Even as digital commerce thrives, brick-and-mortar formats are rebounding through experiential, high-concept stores. Mall footfalls are back to pre-COVID levels, and with them, hiring is back in full swing.

  • Fashion and lifestyle brands like Celio, Rare Rabbit, Zudio, Levi’s, and Puma are onboarding store staff and managers across expanding city footprints.
